Indiana Gyberson
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Indiana Gyberson was a student of William Merritt Chase both at his New York School of Art and his Shinnecock School of Art in Long Island. Gyberson's paintings are particularly influenced by Chase's early works, especially his still lifes and genre paintings. Gyberson is noted for her exhibition activity with the Art Institute of Chicago from 1904-1926.
Notes: Little is known about Indiana Gyberson. Active in Chicago art circles, she was a member of the Chicago Painters and Sculptors Association as well as the Chicago Galleries Association. In 1904 she listed her address as Sherwood Studios in New York City, the first year that she exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. She didn't exhibit again until 1919 at the Institute and continued to exhibit there through 1928. From 1925-1926 she showed at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. No record of her is found after this period. Her art has a somewhat surreal, enigmatic feeling which leaves the viewer enchanted but, temptingly, unresolved.
