Although there is no record of Perry traveling to China, he painted several of these genre portraits with Chinese subjects and buildings in the background. Perry's travels took him to California and Hawaii, and it is possible that he was inspired to paint subjects such as these after visiting the vibrant Chinatown communities in both San Francisco and Honolulu.
